Kuda Haa Marine Protected Area (Maldives)

Weather…

Kuda Haa is a prominent underwater pinnacle, or 'thila,' located in the North Male Atoll, which has been under official protection since 1995. This unique geological formation consists of two distinct peaks rising from a depth of approximately 30 meters to within 6 meters of the surface, resembling the humps of a camel. The reef is renowned for its extraordinary density of marine life, with steep vertical walls densely carpeted in soft corals, sponges, and sea fans. Its strategic position makes Kuda Haa a vital sanctuary for a vast array of reef inhabitants, including batfish, groupers, and various species of moray eels. Frequent currents in the channel deliver nutrient-rich waters, attracting pelagic predators such as bluefin trevally and reef sharks. As one of the earliest designated protected areas in the country, it serves as a cornerstone for Maldivian marine conservation efforts, shielding this fragile coral ecosystem from destructive fishing practices and unsustainable diving pressure.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to this marine protected area is facilitated by local diving operators based in the North Malé Atoll, offering daily scheduled trips via traditional dhonis or modern dive boats.
📅
Best season
The optimal visiting window spans from late December through April, characterized by calm ocean surfaces, reduced rainfall, and exceptionally clear underwater visibility.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The distinct topography features twin submerged peaks, locally referred to as 'thilas', interconnected by a saddle and densely covered in spirited sponge formations.
🎒
What to bring
Scuba divers must bring comprehensive diving apparatus including an accurate depth gauge, underwater flashlight to illuminate the sponges, and a safety marker buoy.
🅿️
Parking
Terrestrial parking is naturally inapplicable for this open-water site; all logistics are handled by the dive centers originating from nearby islands or the capital area.
⚠️
Safety
As a protected area, strictly observe the 'no-touch' policy to preserve delicate sponges. Watch out for occasional moderate currents and monitor depth limitations.
⏱️
Time needed
Allow approximately a half-day for the complete experience, factoring in the scenic boat ride to the peaks, thorough safety briefings, and the dive itself.
