Cocoa Island Beach is situated on Makunufushi Island in the South Malé Atoll, geographically positioned about 30 kilometers south of Velana International Airport. The island is characterized by its narrow, elongated shape, culminating in a vast sandbank that extends hundreds of meters into the turquoise lagoon during low tide. Geologically, the island is composed of biogenic coral sand and is encircled by a shallow reef system, providing excellent conditions for observing near-shore marine life. Historically, Makunufushi was utilized for coconut cultivation before its redevelopment into one of the Maldives' most exclusive retreats in the 1970s. The local architecture often draws inspiration from traditional Maldivian fishing vessels known as dhonis, emphasizing the cultural connection to the sea.
