Malé Commercial Harbour (Maldives)

Weather…

The Malé Commercial Harbour serves as the economic gateway to the Maldives and the primary hub for the island nation's international trade. Located on the northwestern side of the capital island, Malé, the port is operated by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and handles over 90 percent of the country's total imports. Due to the extremely limited land area of Malé, the harbour is spatially constrained, leading to complex logistical challenges in container storage and turnover. Historically, the port has evolved from a basic anchorage for sailing vessels into a modern facility equipped with specialized cranes and terminals. The site is critical for the supply of food, construction materials, and consumer goods to the entire archipelago. Given the steady economic growth and the congestion at the current site, the government is planning to relocate major commercial operations to the industrial island of Thilafushi to expand capacity. The harbour also plays a vital role in national security as the only interface for large-scale logistics and supply chains.
