The Stolzembourg Nature Area extends along the Our River on the border with Germany and is characterized by a fascinating symbiosis of nature and mining history. The steep slopes of the Our Valley host rare rocky biotopes and oak forests that were formerly used economically and are now under protection. The area is known for its geological richness, particularly the copper ore deposits mined as early as the Middle Ages. By abstaining from intensive forestry, valuable deadwood structures have developed, providing habitats for rare beetle species like the stag beetle. The Our River itself is a structurally rich watercourse here, serving as a sanctuary for the endangered freshwater pearl mussel and various salmon species. Stolzembourg is a core area of the Our Nature Park and an important component of the cross-border biotope network. Best season
Spring (April-May) brings out the first post-mining plants like heather and various lichens. Autumn (September-October) shows the foliage of beech forests in bright colours along the Our river.
Best time of day
Morning is convenient for observing the play of light and shadow on the rocks and old mining infrastructure. Late afternoon provides soft light for photographing the rock formations and the forest.
Etiquette
Do not enter abandoned tunnels or pits - danger of collapse! Stay on designated paths and respect barriers. Collecting minerals is prohibited.
What to bring
Sturdy footwear with a profiled sole is essential on the rocky and often wet forest paths. A flashlight can be useful to illuminate the shadows of rock overhangs, but do not enter caves.
Getting there
The area is located near Stolzembourg, accessible via the N10 road and the Route de l'Our. A hiker's parking at the village entrance provides access to trails through the mining region along the Our.
What to expect
The post-mining flora is often inconspicuous but full of peculiarities - take time to discover the lichens and mosses on the rocks. The view over the Our valley rewards patient hikers.
