Vianden Castle (Luxembourg)

Weather…

Vianden Castle is one of the most magnificent and largest feudal residences from the Romanesque and Gothic periods in Europe. The castle was built between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of a Roman castellum and a Carolingian refuge. For centuries, it served as the seat of the powerful Counts of Vianden, who maintained close ties with the French royal court and the German Empire. Architecturally, the complex is renowned for its double-storey chapel, the grand knights' hall, and the Byzantine gallery. After the departure of the House of Nassau in the 16th century, the castle gradually fell into ruin and was partially sold for building materials in the 19th century. In 1977, the castle was transferred to the Luxembourgish state and underwent a faithful restoration, making it today one of the country's most visited monuments. Perched high above the Our river valley, the castle has a spectacular sight and provides a deep look into medieval courtly life. Every year, it hosts knightly festivals and cultural exhibitions that keep the region's history alive.
