The Ourmündung nature reserve marks the spectacular point near Wallendorf-Pont where the Our River flows into the Sauer. This cross-border area is of central importance to the riverine ecosystem in the Eifel-Ardennes region. The dynamic interaction of the two rivers creates valuable gravel bars and softwood floodplains that serve as spawning grounds for rare fish species such as the grayling and Atlantic salmon. In the surrounding riparian woodlands, the kingfisher is a regular breeder, while the black stork utilizes the area for foraging. Special attention is given to the reintroduction of migratory fish and the protection of the freshwater pearl mussel, which has one of its last sanctuaries here. Visitors can explore the confluence region via a nature trail that provides information on the importance of water conservation and the joint management by Luxembourgish and German authorities.

Best season
The alluvial forests are particularly impressive in spring from April to May, when early bloomers like wood anemone cover the ground. Autumn from September to October has great opportunities for observing migratory birds at the confluence of the Our and Sauer rivers.
Best time of day
The morning hours between 7 and 10 am are optimal for observing the lively activity of water birds on the rivers. In the late afternoon from 4 pm, you can often see beavers or otters at their activities along the shore.
Etiquette
The bank zones are sensitive habitats - do not enter them and keep distance from the watercourses. Boating on the rivers with boats or canoes is usually not permitted in the protected area.
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars (8x-10x) is essential for identifying water birds and mammals on the opposite bank. Weatherproof clothing and waterproof shoes are recommended due to the proximity of the rivers.
Getting there
The Ourmündung area is located near Reisdorf and is accessible via the N10 and N17 roads. A hiking parking lot is at the bridge over the Our; from here, several marked routes start through the alluvial forests.
What to expect
Beavers are nocturnal - the best chance to see them is at dusk and with a lot of patience. Use the elevated observation points along the dikes for a better overview of the river delta.
