Goldkaul (Luxembourg)

Weather…

Goldkaul is a prominent rock face and cave formation in the heart of Little Switzerland, near the village of Consdorf. The name likely derives from the golden reflections that appear on the iron-rich sandstone layers during low sun positions. Geologically, the formation displays the typical weathering patterns of Luxembourg sandstone, featuring honeycomb structures and deep horizontal incisions. Historically, the area was a site for quarrying millstones, and traces of this manual work can still be seen on the rock walls today. Goldkaul is situated on a steep slope above the Black Ernz valley and is accessible via the Mullerthal Trail. The vegetation surrounding the rocks consists primarily of mosses, ferns, and lichens, which thrive in the shaded and humid microclimate of the valley.
