Brouch Castle Mound (Luxembourg)

Weather…

The Brouch Castle Mound, a classic example of a motte-and-bailey fortification, stands as a significant remnant of early medieval defensive architecture in Luxembourg. This man-made earthwork likely dates back to the 10th or 11th century, serving as a fortified residence for the local minor nobility. Strategically positioned on a slope overlooking the valley, the site provided command over vital transport routes in the Mersch district. Archaeological evidence suggests that the summit was once crowned by a timber defensive tower, protected by wooden palisades and ditches. While the organic building materials have long since decayed, the prominent earthen structure remains preserved as a protected monument. The site illustrates the evolutionary step from Carolingian refuges to the more permanent stone castles that characterize the Eisch Valley today. Now covered by forest, the mound retains its original shape, serving as an important archaeological resource for understanding medieval settlement patterns and lordship in the Guttland region.
