Blast Furnaces Belval (Luxembourg)

Weather…

The blast furnaces of Belval are the monumental cathedrals of Luxembourg's industrial history. As the last two survivors of what were once dozens of blast furnaces in the country, they rise like rusty giants over the modern university and research district of Belval. After the last furnace was shut down in 1997, the decision was made not to demolish these witnesses of the 'Iron Age' but to integrate them as a central element into the new urban development. Today, Blast Furnace A is open to the public. A climb to its top at a height of 82 meters has not only an insight into the brutal working world of the steel smelters but also a spectacular panoramic view over the transformed industrial landscape. At night, the steel colossuses are impressively illuminated, turning into a gigantic light sculpture that symbolizes the transformation of an entire region from heavy industry to a knowledge-based society.
