Galgenberg (Luxembourg)

Weather…

Galgenberg, known as Gaalgebierg in Luxembourgish, is a prominent hill overlooking the city of Esch-sur-Alzette in the south of the country. Its name recalls the historical execution site of the Lordship of Esch, but today the hill has transformed into the most important recreation area for Luxembourg's second-largest city. The summit houses an extensive municipal park with terraced flower gardens, fountains, and a variety of leisure activities. Of particular note is the 'Escher Déierepark' (animal park), which displays a variety of native species with free admission. Geologically, Galgenberg belongs to the Minette region, reflected in the reddish tint of the soil caused by high iron content. The observation platforms offer an impressive view of the industrial remnants of Belval and the dense urban development of the Alzette Valley. The hill is also the setting for numerous cultural events and hosts a campsite and sports facilities. It embodies the region's transition from a center of heavy industry to a livable, green urban space.
