Masitise Cave (Lesotho)

Weather…

Masitise Cave House is a remarkable historical site in southern Lesotho, showcasing a unique blend of natural geology and 19th-century architecture. Founded in 1866 by French missionary David-Frédéric Ellenberger, the house was built into a natural sandstone rock shelter to provide safety during local conflicts. Ellenberger constructed brick walls across the opening of the cave, creating a home where the rock ceiling and rear walls remain in their natural state. Now serving as a museum, the site preserves important historical documents of the Basotho people, early missionary journals, and various archaeological finds from the surrounding area. The most famous feature of the cave house is a fossilized dinosaur footprint embedded in the ceiling of the main room, providing a prehistoric link to Lesotho's ancient landscape and attracting history enthusiasts worldwide.
