Byblos Castle (Lebanon)

Weather…

Byblos Castle, also known as Gbeil Castle, is a prominent Crusader fortress located in one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. It was constructed in the 12th century, around 1104, by the Crusaders who utilized indigenous limestone and repurposed blocks from ancient Roman structures. The fortification features a massive central keep and defensive walls reinforced by five corner towers. Throughout history, the castle was partially dismantled during Saladin's siege in 1188 but was later rebuilt and expanded by the Crusaders and subsequently by the Mamluks. The surrounding archaeological site encompasses over 7,000 years of history, including Phoenician temples and royal necropolises. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the castle provides profound insights into the strategic importance of the Levantine coast during the Middle Ages and the convergence of various ancient civilizations.
