The Usma Ridge is a prominent topographic feature forming part of the extensive terminal moraine system that surrounds Lake Usma in western Latvia. Located on the border between the Ventspils and Talsi districts, the ridge was created by the accumulation of glacial debris at the edge of a stationary ice sheet during the last glaciation. It reaches elevations of approximately 50 meters above the lake's surface, offering impressive views of Lake Usma, which is the fourth largest lake in the country. The ridge is characterized by its sandy and gravelly soils, which support unique plant communities including various mosses, lichens, and resilient pine trees. The proximity to the Moricsala Nature Reserve, established in 1912, highlights the high ecological value and biodiversity of this glaciated landscape. Historically, the ridge has influenced the settlement patterns and road networks of the Usma region, as its elevation provided stability in a landscape otherwise dominated by lakes and bogs. Today, it remains a key landmark for hikers and nature enthusiasts exploring the diverse terrain of the Kurzeme interior.
