Usmas Lake (Usmas ezers) is the sixth largest lake in Latvia, located in the western province of Kurzeme. It covers a surface area of approximately 38 to 41 square kilometers and is renowned for its highly indented shoreline and numerous islands. The largest of its seven islands, Viskūžu Island, spans over 300 hectares, making it the largest inland lake island in the country. The lake is a remnant of the ancient Ancylus Lake and reaches a maximum depth of 27 meters. Ecologically, it is a vital site, hosting the Moricsala Nature Reserve on one of its islands, which was founded in 1912 as the first nature reserve in Latvia. The lake is a popular destination for yachting and fishing, with its waters teeming with pike, perch, and bream. Surrounded by vast coniferous forests, the area provides a tranquil escape and is a significant habitat for various water birds.
