Stende is a railway town located in the Talsi Municipality of northwestern Latvia, having developed as a result of the construction of the Ventspils-Rybinsk rail line in 1901. Its strategic role as a logistics hub for timber and agricultural products fueled its growth throughout the 20th century. Nearby, the historic Stende Estate (Stendes muiža) features a neoclassical manor house that served as the ancestral home of the von Bruiningk family. The town is nationally significant for agricultural science, hosting one of Latvia's oldest plant breeding and research stations, established in 1922. Stende's urban layout is characterized by functional architecture from the railway era and peaceful residential zones. The town is also known for its motocross traditions, with local tracks hosting regional competitions. Surrounded by the dense forests and rolling terrain of the North Kurzeme Upland, Stende gives a quiet, community-focused lifestyle rooted in its industrial and scientific heritage.
