Best season

The best time for birdwatching in Pape is during the spring and autumn migrations from April to May and September to October. During the summer months from June to August, wild horses and aurochs are also active on the meadows.

Early morning is handy for witnessing birds singing and feeding, while wild horses are most active during the cooler hours. Late dusk also provides good opportunities, especially for waterfowl returning to their roosts.

Keep a distance of at least 50 metres from the wild horses and aurochs to avoid stressing them. Do not feed the animals, and stay on the paths to protect the sensitive dunes and meadows.

Getting there

Pape Nature Park is located on the Latvian coast, about 30 kilometres southwest of Liepāja. Access is via road P111, from which signposted paths lead to the park; parking is available at the visitor centre.
