Pape Nature Park (Latvia)

Weather…

Pape Nature Park is located on the Baltic coast in southwestern Latvia and is an internationally recognized center for rewilding and biodiversity conservation. The park encompasses Lake Pape, expansive bogs, and coastal dunes, featuring a unique mosaic of wet meadows where wild horses (Koniks) and European bison were reintroduced starting in 1999. These large herbivores play a vital role in maintaining the open grassland ecosystems and preventing forest encroachment through natural grazing. Pape is also a critical corridor for bird migration in Northern Europe; millions of birds pass through the narrow strip between the sea and the lake every autumn. The Pape Bird Observatory has conducted scientific research and bird ringing here for decades, providing essential data on migratory patterns. Cultural heritage is equally important in the park, highlighted by the historic Pape fishing village with its traditional reed-thatched houses. Visitors can traverse specialized nature trails that showcase the dynamic coastal landscape and offer glimpses of reintroduced wildlife in their natural habitat.
