Si Phan Don (4000 Islands)

Si Phan Don, meaning '4,000 Islands', is a riverine archipelago located in the far south of Laos where the Mekong stretches to its widest point. It is a place where time slows down, and the main activity is soaking in the tranquil river atmosphere. The most popular islands for travelers are Don Det and Don Khon, which are linked by a historic French railway bridge. The region is home to Khone Phapheng, the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia by volume. Nature lovers flock here for the chance to spot the rare Irrawaddy dolphins near the Cambodian border. Cycling through lush rice paddies and past colonial ruins is the best way to explore the islands.
