💡 Tips
- Rent a bicycle to explore the island; the terrain is flat and traffic is virtually non-existent.
- There are limited ATMs, and they sometimes run out of cash, so bring enough Kip from the mainland.
- The pace of life is incredibly slow; embrace the 'island time' mentality and don't rush.
- Catching a local ferry to the neighboring islands of Don Det or Don Khon makes for a great day trip.
- Sunset over the Mekong is a daily ritual; find a western-facing terrace.
🍽 Food
Try it grilled or in a soup at any of the family-run guesthouses along the water.
Stop at a roadside stall while cycling to hydrate with fresh coconut water.
A fragrant, spicy minced fish salad typical of southern Laos.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
A small morning market selling fresh produce, fish, and simple local clothing.
Look for locally produced palm sugar wrapped in leaves, a sweet regional specialty.
Ride out of town through the rice paddies for total peace and quiet.
Almost every guesthouse provides a hammock on the veranda; it's the ultimate spot to relax.

Muang Khong is the main settlement on Don Khong island, the largest island in the Mekong's Si Phan Don archipelago, the so-called Four Thousand Islands in the far south of Laos just before the Cambodian border. The island is more than 18 kilometres long and several kilometres wide, with quiet villages, paddy fields, coconut palms, old temples such as Wat Phuang Kaew and well-preserved wooden and colonial houses. Muang Khong itself lies on the eastern shore of the island and is now connected to the mainland by a bridge. It is the most peaceful of the three main hubs in Si Phan Don, almost sleepy in atmosphere, and is well suited to bicycle tours, boat trips and watching the Irrawaddy river dolphins downstream. The Khone Falls add scenic depth nearby.
