Getting there
Access to this southern park is usually arranged from Pakse, heading south towards King Fisher Ecolodge or the village of Kiet Ngong, which act as primary gateways. Organized tours or hired 4x4 vehicles are the most practical means of reaching the park boundaries.
Best season
The dry season, spanning from November to March, has the most reliable conditions for wildlife spotting and navigating the roads. During the rainy season, the vast wetlands expand significantly, making many areas entirely inaccessible due to severe flooding.
Terrain & paths
The landscape consists of extensive low-lying wetlands, slow-moving rivers, and dense semi-evergreen forests. Movement within the park often requires guided boat trips through the waterways or trekking on poorly defined, muddy forest trails.
What to bring
Lightweight, quick-drying tropical clothing and strong mosquito repellent are absolutely necessary for the humid jungle environment. Essential items include a waterproof dry bag for electronics, reliable waterproof footwear, and a good pair of binoculars.
Parking
Secure parking is essentially limited to eco-lodges or guesthouses in the surrounding villages such as Kiet Ngong. From these base camps, visitors typically proceed on foot, by local boat, or via specialized guided transport arranged by local operators.
Safety
Travel strictly with an experienced local guide due to the complex terrain, wildlife risks, and the presence of unexploded ordnance in certain remote sectors. Malaria and dengue are real risks, so strict mosquito bite prevention measures are essential.
Time needed
Plan for a minimum of two to three days to experience a jungle trek, a wetland boat tour, and some birdwatching. The remote location and travel times involved make a day trip highly impractical and exhausting.
