Kochkor lies in the northern part of the Naryn Region at about 1810 metres above sea level in a wide upland valley and has roughly 13,000 inhabitants. The town has long been an important caravan and market station, as it sits at the crossroads of the road from Bishkek over the Dolon Pass to Naryn and the route to alpine Lake Song-Kul, one of the most beautiful summer pastures of Kyrgyz herders. Kochkor is famous nationwide for its felt craft: numerous women's cooperatives produce traditional shyrdaks and ala-kiyiz here, thick rugs of dyed sheep wool whose swirling and zigzag patterns carry centuries-old pastoral symbols and protective signs. These felt wares are recognised as part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage and are exported from Kochkor to customers around the world.
