Kel-Suu Lake (Kyrgyzstan)

Weather…

Kel-Suu Lake is one of Kyrgyzstan's most remote and spectacular high-altitude lakes, located in the Naryn Region near the Chinese border. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 3,514 meters within the Kok-Kyia Valley of the At-Bashi Range. The lake was formed tectonically by an earthquake that blocked a river channel, creating a narrow, fjord-like basin flanked by vertical cliffs rising up to 500 meters. Stretching about 12 kilometers in length, the lake is renowned for its shifting colors, ranging from deep turquoise to milky blue. A unique characteristic of Kel-Suu is its unstable water level; in certain years, such as 2013 and 2014, the lake almost entirely disappeared through subterranean cave systems, earning it the nickname 'The Disappearing Lake.' The region is accessible only by off-road vehicles via difficult mountain passes and serves as a summer grazing ground for the herds of local nomads.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this deeply hidden glacier lake requires a challenging, rugged 4x4 drive from Naryn through the Kok-Kiya Valley, followed by a demanding final hike or horseback ride to the water.
📅
Best season
Mid-summer is definitely the most practical time to visit, as the severe winter conditions and massive snow accumulations make the rocky gorge completely inaccessible for much of the calendar year.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The final approach involves traversing a highly rugged, steep rocky gorge with uneven ground, thick mud, and potentially slippery, large boulders scattered right near the water's edge.
🎒
What to bring
You must pack extremely sturdy hiking boots, exceptionally warm layers, a heavy windbreaker, and reliable waterproof gear, as the local weather near the Chinese border can be volatile and freezing.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles are usually left securely at the established yurt camps in the lower Kok-Kiya Valley, which effectively serve as the rustic base camp before starting the final rigorous hike or horse ride.
⚠️
Safety
The intensely remote location means there is absolutely no mobile reception; you should always travel with an experienced guide, be cautious of loose rocks, and prepare for sudden cold weather drops.
⏱️
Time needed
A proper trip here is usually organized as a rigorous multi-day expedition starting from Naryn, with at least half a full day strictly dedicated to carefully exploring the hidden lake area itself.
