Kel-Suu Lake

Kel-Suu Lake is undoubtedly one of the most dramatic and photogenic places in all of Central Asia. Hidden in the Ak-Sai valley near the Chinese border, this lake has only become a destination for adventurers in recent years. It was formed by a massive landslide that dammed the Kel-Suu River, creating a 12-kilometer-long lake in a narrow canyon. The water glows in intense turquoise or deep emerald green and is framed by vertical rock walls up to 400 meters high. A special feature of Kel-Suu is its name, which means 'coming water'. The lake can drain almost completely within a few days through underground caves and channels, only to fill up just as quickly later. This phenomenon is unpredictable, making every visit a game of luck. If the water level is high enough, visitors can rent small motorboats to venture into the remote parts of the canyon and explore hidden caves. Access is extremely challenging and requires crossing several rivers and traversing swampy terrain, which is only possible with experienced drivers and robust off-road vehicles. Additionally, a border permit is required. On-site, there are several yurt camps offering simple accommodation. The best time to visit is from late July to August. Despite the difficult accessibility, the sight of this 'hidden lake' is one of the most rewarding experiences for any traveler to Kyrgyzstan.
