Water temperature…
Naryn is the capital of the eponymous region and, with about 40,000 inhabitants, sits at roughly 2020 metres above sea level in a narrow valley of the Inner Tian Shan, threaded by the meandering Naryn River. The town stretches for almost 15 kilometres along the river bank but is rarely more than three blocks wide, squeezed between steep mountain flanks. Naryn is the coldest major town in Kyrgyzstan, with winter temperatures that regularly drop below minus thirty degrees Celsius. It was founded in 1868 as a Russian fort along an ancient caravan road and, until Soviet times, served as an important trading post on the route to the Tarim Basin. Today Naryn is a key stop on the way to the Torugart Pass into China, hosts a campus of the University of Central Asia, and acts as the launch point for journeys to the Tash Rabat caravanserai and Lake Song-Kul.
