Kemin lies on the eastern edge of the Chuy Valley at about 1280 metres above sea level at the entrance to the spectacular Boom Gorge and has roughly 11,000 inhabitants. The town is the administrative centre of the Kemin District, an agricultural region known for its potato, apple and berry harvests that at the same time forms the gateway to the high alpine valleys of the Chong-Kemin region. It is also the birthplace of Askar Akayev, the first president of Kyrgyzstan after independence in 1991, whose family comes from the village of Kyzyl-Bayrak just outside town. Strategically Kemin sits at the junction of the main highway and the only railway line between the Chuy Valley and Lake Issyk-Kul: every truck, bus and train heading for the beaches and sanatoriums of the great alpine lake must inevitably pass through the narrow gorge of the Chu River right here.
