Mount Kenya (Kenya)

Weather…

Mount Kenya, standing at 5,199 metres, is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa after Kilimanjaro. The mountain is an extinct stratovolcano that formed approximately 3 million years ago, once reaching heights of over 7,000 metres before erosion and glaciation carved its current jagged profile. It features three main peaks: Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana, with only the latter being accessible to hikers without technical climbing gear. The area surrounding the mountain is protected within Mount Kenya National Park and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. The vegetation is remarkably diverse, ranging from dense rainforest and bamboo belts at lower elevations to alpine moorlands featuring unique giant lobelias and senecios near the summit. The mountain serves as a critical water tower for Kenya, as its glaciers and ice fields feed several major rivers, including the Tana and Ewaso Ng'iro. For the local Kikuyu, Meru, and Embu peoples, Mount Kenya remains a sacred site, revered as the dwelling place of their god, Ngai.
