The mountain itself is an extinct volcano, with its primary peaks, Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m), having been sculpted by ancient glaciers and erosion. The vegetation changes dramatically with altitude, transitioning from dense montane forests and bamboo belts to afro-alpine moorlands characterized by giant groundsels and lobelias. This unique flora has evolved to survive the extreme temperature swings between freezing nights and intense tropical days. Best season
The best time to visit Mount Kenya is during the dry months of January to March and June to October. Trails are drier then, and wildlife viewing is most rewarding across the different elevations.
Best time of day
In the morning from 6 to 9 am, many animals are active, especially in the lower elevations. Late afternoon provides higher chances of spotting rare species like the bongo in the forests.
Etiquette
Stay on marked trails to avoid disturbing the sensitive vegetation. Do not feed animals and keep distance from wild boars and monkeys, as they may become aggressive.
What to bring
Warm clothing and a waterproof jacket are essential due to the variable altitude. Good hiking boots with treaded soles and binoculars for birdwatching are recommended.
Getting there
The park is accessible from Nairobi via the A2 road, with a drive to the main Naro Moru gate of about three hours. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for higher routes from the gate onward.
What to expect
The altitudinal diversity requires time and acclimatization - plan at least two days for thorough exploration. Wildlife sightings are often a matter of luck, especially in the dense mid-level forests.
