The Loldaika Hills are a collection of ancient granite monoliths and hills located on the Laikipia Plateau in central Kenya, rising to elevations of over 2,000 meters above sea level. Geologically, the hills consist of Precambrian basement rocks that have resisted erosion more effectively than the surrounding plains over millions of years. This landscape forms a critical wildlife corridor between the northern rangelands and the Mount Kenya ecosystem, supporting diverse populations of elephants, lions, and endangered wild dogs. The area is characterized by a mosaic of dry cedar forests, open grasslands, and rocky outcrops, which provide unique microclimates for various plant species. Historically, the hills have been used for pastoralism by local communities, while today they host private conservancies focused on sustainable land management and biodiversity protection. The region's strategic location makes it an essential watershed for the Ewaso Nyiro River system, which sustains life in the arid lands further north.
