South Theater of Jerash (Jordan)

Weather…

The South Theater of Jerash is the larger and more magnificent of the two ancient theaters in the city, completed between 90 and 92 AD during the reign of Emperor Domitian. It is home to a seating capacity for over 3,000 spectators and is celebrated for its near-well-suited acoustics, where a sound from the stage can be heard clearly in the highest rows. The stage backdrop, or Scaenae Frons, was originally a grand two-story structure adorned with Corinthian columns and elaborate sculptures, many of which are still visible today. Notably, Greek letters are still engraved on many of the stone seats, which served as a seat-numbering system for the citizens of ancient Gerasa. The theater's seating area was partially carved directly into the hillside, a common Roman technique to ensure structural integrity and natural elevation. Today, it remains a bustling cultural venue, hosting major performances and international artists during the annual Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts.
