Ajloun Castle (Jordan)

Weather…

Ajloun Castle, also known as Qal'at ar-Rabad, is a prominent masterpiece of medieval Islamic military architecture, strategically situated atop Mount 'Auf. It was commissioned between 1184 and 1185 by Izz al-Din Usama, a nephew of the famous general Saladin, specifically to defend the region against Crusader incursions. The fortress commanded a vital position over the trade routes between Jordan and Syria and guarded the nearby iron mines essential for weaponry. Unlike many contemporary fortifications built by Crusaders, Ajloun features a distinct Arab design characterized by massive square towers and a protective dry moat. While the Mamluks expanded the structure in the 13th century, it withstood Mongol invasions and survived several major earthquakes in 1837 and 1927. Today, the castle's battlements offer panoramic panoramic views across the Jordan Valley toward the Dead Sea and the highlands of Galilee. The well-preserved interior houses a museum exhibiting artifacts from the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods.
