Oval Plaza (Jordan)

Weather…

The Oval Plaza is the most distinctive architectural feature of the ancient Roman city of Gerasa, modern-day Jerash, dating back to the 1st century AD. Measuring approximately 90 by 80 meters, the plaza is enclosed by 56 graceful Ionic columns that form a majestic colonnade. Its unique oval shape was a brilliant solution by Roman planners to seamlessly link the main thoroughfare, the Cardo Maximus, with the Temple of Zeus. The plaza floor is covered with the original limestone paving stones, which have survived nearly intact for almost two thousand years. At the center of the square, a podium once supported statues or a religious altar, serving as the focal point for public gatherings. Today, the plaza remains the symbolic heart of Jerash and continues to host major cultural events, standing as a masterpiece of classical urban design.
