Historic Town of Grand-Bassam (Côte d’Ivoire)

Weather…

The historic town of Grand-Bassam, situated on the coast of Ivory Coast east of Abidjan, served as the country's first colonial capital from 1893 to 1896. The town is an outstanding example of late 19th and early 20th-century colonial architecture and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2012. Its urban plan is divided into the colonial quarter, 'Ancien Bassam,' featuring grand administrative buildings and residences, and the African village of 'N'zima.' Grand-Bassam played a central role as a seaport and commercial hub before a devastating yellow fever epidemic in 1899 led to the transfer of the capital to Bingerville. Today, the town is a major cultural center, famous for the Abissa festival and its animated craft industry. The architecture is notable for its functional adaptations to the tropical climate, such as wide verandas and high ceilings. As a symbol of Ivorian history, Grand-Bassam preserves the legacy of the encounter between African traditions and European colonialism.
