First French settlement in Assinie (Côte d’Ivoire)

Weather…

The settlement of Assinie-Mafia on the southeastern coast of Ivory Coast marks the site of the first French presence in the country. In 1687, French missionaries and traders led by Jean-Baptiste du Casse established the first fortified post, known as Fort Saint-Louis. This early colonial venture was closely linked to the Kingdom of Assinie, whose local ruler maintained favorable relations with the Europeans. A notable historical event was the journey of Prince Aniaba to France, where he was received at the court of Louis XIV, highlighting early cultural exchanges between the two regions. During the 19th century, Assinie emerged as a major hub for trade in gold, ivory, and later palm oil. The historic settlement is located on a narrow strip of land between the Ébrié Lagoon and the Gulf of Guinea. Today, while Assinie-Mafia is an exclusive seaside resort, it preserves in its ruins and local oral histories the traces of its pioneering role in Ivorian colonial history.
