This narrow, approximately 30-kilometer-long waterway separates the mainland from a sandy peninsula known as Assinie-Mafia, famous for its exclusive resorts. Historically, Assinie was the site of the first French trading post in Côte d'Ivoire, established in 1687. The lagoon is characterized by calm brackish water lined with extensive mangrove forests that serve as a nursery for numerous fish species and crustaceans. The area is an important site for conservation, particularly for sea turtles that lay their eggs on the adjacent beaches. In recent decades, the lagoon has developed into the country's premier high-end tourism destination, with luxury lodges and private villas lining its shores. Despite the tourist development, traditional fishing remains a vital resource for the local Essouman communities.
