Vico Equense is an easy on the eye town situated at the gateway to the Sorrento Peninsula, perched on a high tuff cliff overlooking the Gulf of Naples. The settlement's origins trace back to pre-Roman times, inhabited by Oscans and Etruscans before becoming a favored retreat under Roman rule. The historic center, or 'Borgo,' maintains its medieval layout with narrow alleys and significant monuments like Castello Giusso, founded in the 13th century by Charles II of Anjou. An architectural highlight is the former Cathedral of Santissima Annunziata, the only Gothic church along the coast, which sits dramatically on a cliff edge directly above the sea. Vico Equense is celebrated not only for its history and views but also as a gastronomic hub, famous for its 'Provolone del Monaco' cheese and for originating the 'Pizza a Metro' (pizza by the meter). The town uniquely blends maritime charm with mountainous terrain, extending from the shoreline up to the slopes of Mount Faito.
