Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve (Italy)

Weather…

The Torre Guaceto State Nature Reserve is located on the Adriatic coast of Puglia, north of the city of Brindisi. Officially established in 1991, the reserve encompasses both a protected marine area and a terrestrial zone of exceptional ecological value. It takes its name from the 16th-century coastal watchtower that was originally built to defend the region from Saracen pirate raids. The landscape is a mosaic of habitats, including Mediterranean scrub (macchia), centuries-old olive groves, and wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. In the marine sector, extensive meadows of Posidonia oceanica seagrass serve as a vital nursery for numerous fish species. Torre Guaceto is also a significant sanctuary for endangered wildlife, particularly the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), for which a specialized recovery center has been established. The reserve is managed with a strong focus on sustainability, promoting organic farming and eco-friendly tourism. Visitors can explore the area through guided hikes, cycling paths, or snorkeling in the pristine waters.
