Lamezia Terme is located in the heart of Calabria, positioned at the narrowest part of the Italian peninsula on the Isthmus of Catanzaro. The city was established in 1968 through the administrative merger of three older towns: Nicastro, Sambiase, and Sant'Eufemia Lamezia. Nicastro is home to the ruins of a Norman-Swabian castle, once a favored residence of Emperor Frederick II, offering panoramic views over the surrounding plains. Sambiase is celebrated for its ancient thermal springs, the Terme di Caronte, which have been utilized for their healing properties since Roman times. Sant'Eufemia serves as the primary transportation hub for the region, hosting Calabria's major international airport and a central railway station connecting southern Italy. Its geographic location between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Sila Mountains makes it a strategic gateway for travelers exploring the Calabrian coast and hinterland. The city's economy is driven by logistics, commerce, and a robust agricultural sector famous for premium olive oil and Lamezia DOC wines.
