Ostuni, famously known as 'La Città Bianca' (The White City), is one of Puglia's most memorable gems. The tradition of whitewashing its buildings began in the Middle Ages to bring light into the narrow alleys and was later used as a disinfectant during plague outbreaks. The city's highest point is crowned by the 15th-century Cathedral, featuring a magnificent 24-ray rose window, one of the largest and most intricate in Europe. The old town is a dazzling maze of staircases, arches, and narrow passages that frequently open up to views of the Adriatic Sea just 8 kilometers away. The surrounding plains are home to some of the oldest olive trees in Italy, protected monuments that produce world-class olive oil. Combining ancient history with a bustling southern Italian atmosphere, Ostuni is a highlight of the Salento region.
