Monte Subasio is a prominent mountain in Umbria, central Italy, located east of Assisi. At 1,290 m, it is a popular excursion destination and part of the Monte Subasio Regional Park. The mountain is mainly composed of limestone and is known for its rich flora and fauna. Slopes are covered by forests of holm oak, downy oak, beech, and pine. Higher elevations feature alpine grasslands and broom shrubs. Monte Subasio is closely linked to the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, who often retreated here for meditation. The hermitages Eremo delle Carceri and Santuario di San Francesco are located on its slopes. The mountain features spectacular views of the Spoleto Valley and the Umbrian landscape. It is an important area for bird migration, hosting raptors such as the common kestrel and common buzzard. Surrounding towns, such as Assisi and Spello, are rich in artistic and historical heritage.
