Grosseto's patronal feast in August, when the traditional Butteri (Maremma horsemen) accompany the image of the patron saint through the old town. Processions and festivities take place in Piazza Dante.
Grosseto, the economic and political hub of the Maremma region in southern Tuscany, has a history deeply intertwined with the reclamation of the surrounding marshlands. The city's massive defensive walls, built by the Medici family between 1574 and 1593, remain almost entirely intact and feature a distinctive hexagonal layout with six bastions. At the center of the old town lies Piazza Dante, home to the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, which dates back to the late 13th century and displays a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. Just outside the city are the ruins of the ancient Etruscan and Roman city of Roselle, providing vital archaeological evidence of the region's early history. Grosseto is situated on a broad plain near the mouth of the Ombrone River, only a few kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Today, the city is a vital center for agriculture and tourism, serving as the main gateway to the Maremma Natural Park.
