The Mesopotamian Marshes, or Al-Ahwar, are a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world's largest inland delta systems. In this water-rich region of southern Iraq, the Ma'dan, or Marsh Arabs, have preserved a lifestyle that traces back to Sumerian times. Their impressive 'Mudhif' houses are constructed entirely from reeds without the use of nails or wood. The marshes consist of a labyrinth of waterways accessible only by traditional flat-bottomed boats called Mashoofs. The area is a haven for biodiversity, hosting numerous migratory bird species and water buffaloes, which are central to the local economy. Culinary experiences include fresh carp and traditional water buffalo cream (Geymar). The marshes are most easily reached via the towns of Chibayish or Nasiriyah. The best time to visit is during winter and early spring (December to March) when the water levels are high and the climate is pleasantly mild, making it convenient for birdwatching and scenic boat tours.
