Central Marshes (Iraq)

Weather…

The Central Marshes, frequently called the Qurna Marshes, represent the core of the Mesopotamian marsh region and are geographically positioned in the perimeter delimited by the settlements of Nasiriyah, Amarah, and Basra. This immense freshwater wetland area was historically fed with water and nutritive sediments by both the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. At the beginning of the 1990s, the Iraqi government ordered the construction of a massive system of dikes and diversion canals, infrastructure that almost completely suppressed the water supply and transformed the perimeter into a saline desert. After 2003, local populations initiated actions to breach the dikes, allowing the waters to flood the affected territory again. Today, a significant portion of the original hydrographic area has recovered.

Getting there
The area is typically accessed via regional roads leading to local settlements near the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, often requiring local guides for navigation through the vast wetland networks.
📅
Best season
The cooler months from late autumn to early spring are generally the best time to visit, avoiding the extreme summer heat that dominates this southern Iraqi region.

Terrain & paths
The landscape consists almost entirely of vast wetlands, reed beds, and waterways, meaning that exploration is primarily conducted by traditional boats rather than walking paths.
🎒
What to bring
Bring reliable sun protection, plenty of drinking water, and insect repellent for the humid marsh environment, along with waterproof bags to protect your electronic devices during boat trips.

Parking
Parking is typically available in the larger border towns or village staging areas before transferring to boats, but formal guarded facilities may be quite limited in remote sections.
