Majnoon Oil Field (Iraq)

Weather…

The Majnoon Oil Field is located in the Basra Governorate of southern Iraq, near the Iranian border, and is recognized as one of the world's largest oil fields. The name Majnoon translates to crazy in Arabic, reflecting the excessive amount of oil discovered there in 1975 by a Brazilian exploration team. The field spans an area of approximately 52 by 15 kilometers and is situated partly within marshy terrain, which presents significant technical challenges for extraction and infrastructure maintenance. With estimated reserves of up to 38 billion barrels, it is a crucial asset for Iraq's long-term energy strategy and economic development. Following the exit of international companies like Shell in 2018, the state-owned Basra Oil Company took direct control of operations, supported by specialized service firms. Current development plans focus on increasing production from the current level of approximately 240,000 barrels per day to much higher targets. Due to its strategic location on the border, the field was a major battlefield during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
The Majnoon Oil Field in southern Iraq is recognized as one of the richest petroleum reserves in the world, playing a truly central and strategic role in both the Iraqi economy and the global energy supply chain.
🚪
Visiting
Functioning as a high-security and strategically critical national energy facility, the entire area is strictly closed off to the general public; any form of tourist visits or close physical approaches are entirely impossible.
👀
Where to view it
Due to the presence of highly extensive and monitored security zones surrounding the oil field, there are no legal or safe ground-level viewpoints; its massive industrial scale can only be vaguely perceived during a regional overflight.
🧺
Local products
Naturally, there are absolutely no tourist-oriented products available in the immediate, heavily restricted vicinity, though the immense wealth generated by the oil industry indirectly shapes the markets in nearby Basra.
📆
Active season
Heavy industrial extraction and complex processing operations run continuously year-round in strict shift rotations, functioning efficiently regardless of the extreme seasonal temperature fluctuations characteristic of the region.
Nearby
Because the oil field itself remains completely off-limits to visitors, travelers typically focus their attention on the historical and cultural metropolis of Basra or explore the fascinating Mesopotamian Marshes of southern Iraq.
