The date palm groves of Basra province historically extended along the 200-kilometer Shatt al-Arab river, which is formed by the confluence of the Euphrates and Tigris. In the mid-20th century, this area, with over 30 million date palms, constituted the largest continuous palm forest on Earth and supplied around 80 percent of the global date harvest. The First Gulf War in the 1980s, combined with increased water salinity caused by upstream dams, catastrophically decimated the tree population. By 2003, the number of productive trees plummeted to under 3 million. The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture has been funding comprehensive replanting programs since 2010. As a result, the province's palm population rose to an estimated 5 million specimens by 2022. Over 40 genetically distinct date varieties are cultivated here, with the Barhi and Hillawi strains considered the most exportable premium qualities.

What is this place?
The Basra Date Palm Groves along the Shatt al-Arab were once the largest in the world and still produce high-quality dates. They are a cultural and agricultural heritage of great importance to the region.
Visiting
The groves are mostly private property, but are well visible from the banks and roads. Some farms welcome visitors if prior permission is obtained.
Where to view it
The best view of the palm groves is from a boat ride on the Shatt al-Arab or from the Basra Corniche. The date market bridge also provides a good view.
Local products
The main products are dates in many varieties, harvested seasonally from August to October. Date syrup and other palm products are also available.
Active season
The groves are most alive during the harvest season in late summer and early autumn. Then farmers are busy picking and processing the dates.
