Mount Damavand is a dormant stratovolcano situated in the Alborz mountain range, about 66 kilometers northeast of Tehran. Reaching an elevation of 5609 meters above sea level, it stands as the highest peak in Iran and the entire Middle East. Although currently inactive, fumaroles near the summit emit sulfurous gases, indicating latent volcanic activity. The mountain holds deep roots in Persian mythology and classical poetry. Its upper slopes are covered with a thick blanket of snow for most of the year, making it a technically demanding target for mountaineers. The first documented ascent was carried out in 1837 by W. T. Thomson. The surrounding protected area hosts rich wildlife, including the rare Armenian mouflon.

Getting there
Expeditions usually start from the village of Polour or Reyneh, accessible via the Haraz Road from Tehran, where mountaineers can acquire permits and arrange local transport to base camps.

The classic climbing season is concentrated in mid-summer, specifically July and August, when the upper slopes are largely free of deep snow and the severe storms are less frequent.

What to bring
