Sun Temple, Modhera (India)

Weather…

The Sun Temple of Modhera was constructed in 1026 CE during the reign of King Bhima I of the Chaulukya dynasty. Located on the banks of the Pushpavati River in Gujarat, it is dedicated to the solar deity Surya. The architectural complex is divided into three main components: the Surya Kund, a large stepped water tank containing 108 miniature shrines; the Sabha Mandap, an assembly hall with 52 intricately carved pillars representing the weeks of the year; and the Guda Mandap, the primary sanctum. Built in the Maru-Gurjara style, the temple is famous for its precise astronomical alignment, designed so that the first rays of the sun would illuminate the deity's image during the equinoxes. Although no longer used for active worship, it stands as a testament to medieval Indian craftsmanship and is meticulously maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
