Lothal (India)

Weather…

Lothal was one of the most prominent cities of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, located in the modern-day state of Gujarat. Established around 2400 BCE, it is celebrated as the world's earliest known artificial dock, linking the Indus river system to trade routes in Mesopotamia and Egypt. The dockyard featured a sophisticated lock-gate system to manage tidal fluctuations, showcasing remarkable hydraulic engineering. The city followed a strict gridiron plan with standardized brick houses, advanced underground drainage, and specialized craft workshops. Lothal was a global hub for bead-making, processing semi-precious stones into luxury goods highly prized across the ancient Near East. Archaeological excavations have yielded numerous seals, standardized weights, and painted pottery that highlight its commercial vitality. Today, the onsite museum provides deep insights into the maritime prowess and urban life of a civilization that flourished over 4,000 years ago.
