Hrisey Island Bird Reserve (Iceland)

Weather…

Hrísey is a small island situated in the Eyjafjörður fjord in northern Iceland, often referred to as the "Pearl of Eyjafjörður." Measuring about 7.5 kilometers in length and 2.5 kilometers in width, the island serves as one of the country's most significant bird sanctuaries. Hrísey is particularly famous for its unusually high density of rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta), which thrive here in the absence of natural predators like foxes or minks. During the summer months, thousands of arctic terns also nest on the island, forming colonies that are among the largest in Iceland. Over 40 different bird species utilize the island for nesting, making it a key site for ornithological observation. A portion of the island has been under environmental protection for decades to preserve its delicate habitats. The small village on the island currently relies on tourism and sustainable fishing. Visitors can explore the House of Shark-Jörundur, which documents the regional history of shark hunting. Hrísey is accessible via a short ferry ride from Árskógssandur, offering a peaceful wildlife experience in a subarctic maritime setting.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Hrisey is interesting year-round, but the best time to observe rock ptarmigans is May to July when the cocks display in breeding plumage. In winter the birds are better camouflaged, but tracks in the snow give them away.
🌅
Best time of day
Morning hours are good as the ptarmigan then forage and are often seen in open areas. Late afternoon they become more active as the heat of the day subsides.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on the paths and keep dogs on a lead as they might startle ground-nesters. Collecting eggs or feathers is prohibited - respect the birdlife.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are sufficient to spot the well-camouflaged birds. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the paths can be rough; in summer, insect repellent is useful against mosquitoes.
🧭
Getting there
Hrisey is reached by ferry from Akureyri, running several times daily; the crossing takes about one hour. On the island there is a small network of hiking trails that are easy to explore.
🦌
What to expect
Ptarmigan are superbly camouflaged - move slowly and look for movement. Sit at a high point and scan the surroundings systematically.
