Stykkishólmur is a pretty harbor town located on the northern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland. The town is widely celebrated for its remarkably well-preserved, colorful wooden houses dating back to the 19th century, which give the town center a unique historical character. Serving as the gateway to the vast Breiðafjörður Bay, the harbor is the primary departure point for the ferry to Flatey Island and the Westfjords, as well as for ecological boat tours among the region's countless islands. Stykkishólmur was the first community in Iceland to receive the "EarthCheck" certification for environmental sustainability in tourism. Architectural highlights include the modern Stykkishólmskirkja, whose striking avant-garde silhouette is visible from miles away. Another major attraction is the "Library of Water," a permanent installation by artist Roni Horn that showcases glacial meltwater from all over Iceland in 24 glass columns. The local economy traditionally relies on fishing, specifically scallops, but is increasingly supported by high-quality eco-tourism.
