Martfű is a dynamic industrial city in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, uniquely situated at a prominent bend of the Tisza River. Its modern history was fundamentally shaped by the Czech industrialist Jan Antonín Baťa, who established a large-scale shoe factory here in 1942, alongside a planned functionalist residential district based on his 'garden city' philosophy. The characteristic red-brick buildings and organized urban layout remain a rare architectural ensemble in Central Europe, showcasing the mid-20th-century industrial design ideals. In addition to its footwear heritage, Martfű became a significant hub for the brewing industry following the opening of one of Hungary's most advanced breweries in 1985. The city is also a recognized wellness destination, boasting a thermal spa that utilizes medicinal waters sourced from a depth of 1,100 meters, particularly effective for treating joint and muscular issues. The nearby Tisza River provides ample opportunities for fishing, rowing, and exploring the lush riverside ecosystems. Having officially attained city status in 1989, Martfű continues to evolve as a modern urban center that balances industrial productivity with high-quality public services and recreational spaces.
