Its modern history was fundamentally shaped by the Czech industrialist Jan Antonín Baťa, who established a large-scale shoe factory here in 1942, alongside a planned functionalist residential district based on his 'garden city' philosophy. In addition to its footwear heritage, Martfű became a significant hub for the brewing industry following the opening of one of Hungary's most advanced breweries in 1985.
