Sumeg Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Sümeg Castle is one of Hungary's most spectacular and best-preserved medieval fortifications, perched atop a steep limestone hill overlooking the town. Its construction began in the mid-13th century following the Mongol invasion, ordered by King Béla IV as part of a nationwide defensive network. Over the centuries, it functioned as a vital strategic border fortress and served for a long period as the residence of the Bishops of Veszprém, especially during the Ottoman occupation of Veszprém. The castle withstood numerous sieges and was never captured by the Ottoman armies, cementing its reputation as an impregnable stronghold. The complex is divided into lower, middle, and upper castle sections, with the Old Tower dating back to the 1260s being its most ancient part. Following a period of decline in the 18th century, the castle underwent significant restoration in the 20th century and has since become a major center for historical reenactment. Today, visitors can experience knightly tournaments, castle games, and interactive exhibits that recreate the medieval atmosphere.
